Bike touring Europe with a baby

An inspirational tale of family travelling fun from Shelley Knoll-Miller

An inspirational tale of family travelling fun from Shelley Knoll-Miller

Between May and August of 2006 our family backpacked and cycle toured through 6 countries, pedalling over 1,300 kilometres and spending 68 nights in a tent with only the equipment we could carry. Our tandem bike and baby trailer wove it's way primarily through river valleys, along bikepaths built by rivers and canals. We travelled lightly, ate simply and enjoyed the sights, sounds, and diversity of continental Europe.

Our 16 month old son, Reuben, loved the outdoor lifestyle and was warmly welcomed by the locals. The huge number of bikepaths in Europe meant that we rode on traffic-less paths for about 85% of our tour.

Cycle-touring is a great way to travel and we hope the story of our adventure (http://www.cycling-europe-with-a-baby.net) will encourage you to get on your bike and GO GO GO! Get on your bike and get out there! To quote GK Chesterton "The world will never starve for want of wonders, but for want of wonder."
