Success at Clifton Hill Primary School

About this page

Clifton Hill Primary has built up their involvement in the Ride2School Program over the last 6 months and are a great example of how to go about getting more students riding and walking to school.

Students at Clifton Hill Primary School are spreading the word about active travel to school and are using a variety of strategies to do it. A small group of students in grade six meet fortnightly to discuss and implement strategies to get more students using active travel. The excitement and enthusiasm in the room can be felt when these students meet. With the tasks divided up between the students and overseen by Assistant Principal Barb Birkett, the running and promotion of the program is made easy.

To get the school going on the Ride2School Program, Assistant Principal, Barb Birkett attended a Ride2School Professional Development Day. This day inspired, motivated and trained her to implement proven techniques in getting more students walking and riding to school.

  • Assisted in the planning of Quiet Neighbourhood Routes.

Some of the upcoming projects that the student group are working on are:

Clifton Hill Primary also decided to allocate some of the government funding they received to building a secure, undercover bike shed. With the assistance of the Bike Parking Experts at Bicycle Victoria they have built a shed which will hold 48 bikes. This means they are providing secure, undercover bike parking for 10% of the school population, as recommended by Ride2School.

Last, but not least, well done to Clifton Hill Primary for winning a prize from Yarra Council in the Council Hands Up! Challenge.
