National Ride2School Day 2010 facts and figures
Over 71,000 students left the car at home and walk and wheeled their way to school on National Ride2School Day.
A grand total of 1,166 schools registered to join in the largest ever national celebration of walking and riding to school.
The results are in and based on the Hands Up! numbers of 486 schools and over 124,000 students we can confidently assert that at least 57% of students walked or rode on the day.
Congratulations to all the parents and teachers who participated. There was so much excitement and fun across the country. Healthy breakfasts, bike rides, bike decorating competitions and parades were all just some of the ways schools celebrated the day.
National Ride2School Day is a great way to kick start regular active travel habits at your school. It's fun, achieveable and so much better for congestion around your school not to mention awesome for the health of your students.
If your school missed National Ride2School Day this year, you can still host a Ride2School Day some other time during the year when it suits your school. The online resources can be used at any time during the year and tailored to your schools needs. It's never too late to hold a Ride2School Day!

Bike maintenance clinics
Courtesy of National Ride2School Day sponsor Goldcross Cycles, a number of Victorian primary and secondary schools won FREE Goldcross Cycles Maintenance presentations. Among the lucky winners were Camberwell Primary School, West Cranbourne Primary School and Epping Secondary College.
The presentations were hugely successfully and the students were very appreciative and attentive learning all about how to ensure that their “ride” was road worthy and the “hands on” approach to changing a tube easily. Every student received a Safety Check list, Goldcross Cycles stickers and a free puncture kit.
First stop: Cranbourne West Primary School
At this presentation a crowd of 30 plus students learnt the step by step process for checking that their bikes were safe to ride and tips on what to do when they find issues with brakes and gears. Cranbourne Goldcross Cycles Manager, Norm Gray kept the students captivated throughout his changing a tube presentation. Learning exactly how to change a flat tyre and get it back in the bike was a big hit with the students.

Second stop: Epping Secondary College
Epping Secondary College’s PE Sandro Biscaro rides to school everyday setting a great example for all his students to follow.
Of the 700 students at this school only about 20 actually ride to school at anyone time. He is trying to change this and is working tireless to make this happen. Despite this low participation rate there was great interest in the maintenance session held by Goldcross Cycles.
Arthur Courtis, Epping’s Goldcross Cycles mechanic did a sensational job imparting all his wisdom to all the interested onlookers.
Students had their bikes checked by the Goldcross Cycles team while answering questions and entertaining them throughout the session.

Third stop: Camberwell Primary School
On hand to help out on this occasion was Richmond’s Goldcross Cycles Store Manager Pat Simmons.
The suburb of Camberwell is located very close to the city and had a great number of students riding to school. After the safety presentation the Goldcross Cycles team held a mini clinic on how to change a tyre and tube.
Students got the chance to strip a tyre and tube from their wheel and then put the lot back together. Every student got a real buzz learning a new skill that they can use everyday.
