Ambassadors promoting Ride to Work in their organisations

Gary Lidle - VicRoads
Chief Executive

Joining the Country Roads Board (VicRoads’ predessor) in 1971 as a graduate civil engineer, Gary Liddle was appointed VicRoads Chief Executive in March 2007.

Gary is a Board member and Chair of Austroads, the Australasian organisation of road authorities. He is also the Chairman of the Australian Chapter of the Road Engineering Association of Asia and Australasia (REAAA) and a member of the REAAA Governing Council. Gary is a board member of the ARRB Group and of the Linking Melbourne Authority.

When he is not working alongside our partners to solve the challenges of our transport network, you’ll find Gary cycling Victoria’s roads. He regularly supports VicRoads corporate team as they ride in the Great Victorian Bike Ride, and has been a State Ambassador for National Ride to Work Day for three years.
In 2006 he completed the 210km leg of Around the Bay in about eight hours.

Adam Rogers, Director Office of Sustainable Transport - Department of Transport and Main Roads, Queensland

Adam joined Transport and Main Roads in 2004 and was appointed Director of the newly created Office of Sustainable Transport in mid-2009.

The Office of Sustainable Transport is charged with taking a futuristic look at transport options that could deliver a more sustainable transport system for Queensland.

Initial areas of focus include climate change, building resilience to oil vulnerability and related issues. The Office is also rolling out the world’s biggest TravelSmart travel behaviour change initiative to 324,000 households in south east Queensland.

TravelSmart Communities projects work directly with households to increase the use of sustainable modes of transport across the whole community. TravelSmart also works with local governments, schools and workplaces.

Adam is a keen cyclist who first started cycling when he was very young but then, like many of us, fell out of the habit after high school. Since getting back on the bike Adam has competed in 6, 8 and 24 hour mountain biking endurance events and cycles 25 km each way to get to work 3 days per week. Adam reveals "The improvements in my health and fitness in the last three years have been really dramatic".

Ambassadors are senior managers who have made the commitment to:

  • Make Ride to Work Day a date on the company calendar and promote it well in advance through the intranet and staff newsletter

  • Organise a celebratory breakfast or encourage attendance at one of the CBD breakfasts to be held around Australia

    Other initiatives:
  • Set a target for participation at all worksites

  • Award prizes for the site with the highest percentage of participants

  • Invite other work contacts and influential friends to promote the event in their own organisation

  • Promote the event through professional associations

Online Ride to Work Day Ambassador registration takes around two minutes - we need to know the location of your worksites around Australia and an estimate of the total number of employees in your organisation.
