Best Ride to Work Day workplace story
This year saw the first involvement of Kiama Council in the ride to work initiative, and for all that participated the first time they have commuted to work via anything but their car.
Those involved came from far and wide (from Minnamurra in the north to Berry in the south and 4 minutes west up the road) to test their ‘varied’ fitness levels against the sharp inclines and strong westerly winds which plague the coastal Kiama region.
Using everything from specialist mountain bikes, their wives bikes, borrowed helmets and a cycle that cost $10 in a ‘eat 3-footlong’s’ subway promotion, the team swapped their cars for the more sustainable method of transport to and from work.
Feeling inspired someone seemingly stupidly throughout the week suggested the whole team make the unprecedented return trip to Gerringong via the newly opened Coastal Walking Trail – a 6km unformed track which skirts the aqua bays and bluff headlands linking Kiama to Gerringong along some of the most spectacular coastline imaginable.
Driven by desire and thoughts of the rendezvous point, a well known Gerringong establishment conveniently positioned a short ride from the trail end point, the arvo expedition team rode (labored) alongside the southern whale migration on their total 12km decent to the deep south. Many laughs were shared along the way, most accompanied by a pointing finger.
All survived the undulating return trip to Gerringong in some capacity with only minor breakages. Stripped and sheared peddles saw two machines crippled along the way, far from either start or end points. For those riders this required the deployment of the equally sustainable, but noticeably slower an. d more entertaining Plan-B – the push and roll.
On completion of this momentous ride (and push-and-roll) participants enjoyed some liquid inspiration and in-depth discussion on new gear and cycle purchases, making it a weekly event, how to explain breakages on their partners bike and signing up for the ‘Sydney to Gong’ J
All participants concurred with the comment made that no one could have possibly had a more enjoyable or picturesque commute to work then us, and that it should be taken advantage of more regularly.
The journey has already sparked interest from additional staff that would like to participate in future events… or would at least like to be on the email group listing so they appear to be proactive and fit to other employees.
