About this page

Every issue of Ride On is full of bike and product reviews, health and riding tips and great ideas for where to ride. The August–September 2008 cover feature offers a dose of high-intensity riding with ten of the best training rides in Victoria

Ten of the best

In the lead-up to Around the Bay in a Day and the summer riding season – and just for the joy of getting out on your bike – we asked Ride On readers to rate ten popular road training routes in Victoria and tell us their favourites too.

Yarra Boulevard

• 12km return
• start and finish at Yarra Bvd / Walmer St / McEvoy St junction, Kew
• turnaround at Yarra Bvd / Chandler Hwy junction (by Talbot Rehab Centre)
• medium grade

The perennial favourite route to and fro on Yarra Boulevard packs a fair number of hills of up to a kilometre in length, with several short detours (such as Studley Park Boathouse and Yarra picnic grounds) involving even more hill work if you choose. Flanked by bush the route parallels several bends in the Yarra River, which you can glimpse far below the road, and you can also see across to Yarra Bend Park and Fairfield golf course on the far bank. The road carries minimal traffic. Birdsong and bikes will be your main companions, plus joggers on the footpath alongside.

Your say

Our readers also recommended these training rides:

Bellarine Peninsula

Ocean Grove to Portarlington, 60km return
“Follow the foreshore through Pt Lonsdale, Queenscliff, St Leonards, Indented Head to
Portarlington and back to Ocean Grove. This ride has hills, coast, flats. I love it.”
