In partnership with Monash City Council and support from the Glen Waverley Police Bicycle Patrol Unit and Vision Australia, Bicycle Victoria conducted \'Monash by Bike\', a free community event for residents of the city. The event catered for people wishing to give bike riding a go or those who hadn’t ridden for a while. It was open to all age groups however the main emphasis was on people over 50.
On 4 April, a chilly Melbourne Saturday morning, fifty people arrived at Caloola Reserve Oakleigh to participate in one of three activities - a beginner’s riding lesson, 9 km ride or 16 km ride.Six volunteer Bicycle Victoria Over 50s Ride Leaders assisted by providing their expert assistance and knowledge in beginner instruction and leading rides.
After gaining inspiration and confidence from the day, many participants have gone on to register in the Over 50s Riding Program, and have committed to riding regularly with their friends and family.Lorna Browne (featured below), 82, “hadn’t ridden for decades” before attending the event. She “was worried that her balance wouldn’t be good” but was so pleased that she could “still do it!” “It was a wonderful day and everyone was very friendly and encouraging,” Lorna says.“Now my daughters are planning some family rides we can do together.”
