Mornington Peninsula teachers learn to Ride2School
About this page
Teachers who attended the Ride2School Professional Development Day left inspired to implement new ideas to get more students walking and riding to school.
Ride2School taught teachers about the program with a Professional Development Day at Rye Primary. A full day of presentations and discussions included a visit of support from two local council members. Cycle enthusiast and teacher, Helen Smith from Westernport Secondary College, also visited with plenty of encouragement to attendees. Teachers walked away from the day energised to implement change by getting more students riding and walking to school.
Some of the things that teachers aim to do now are:
- Inform all staff at their school about the Ride2School Program and gain their support
- Improve bike parking and raise funds to do so
- Start a student group who promote active travel
- Obtain a student population map (GIS map) and develop Quiet Neighbourhood Routes
- Run Bike Ed
- Order recycled bikes

Thanks to all the teachers who came along and showed so much enthusiasm for getting more students walking and riding more often. Thanks also to Rye Primary for providing us with a great venue to run the day as well as the use of their resources.
Ride2School will be running another teacher’s professional development day in a regional area early in 2009. The date and location is yet to be decided.
