Ride2Schoolers – saving the planet

About this page

Ride2School has calculated the greenhouse gas emissions saved by students who choose active travel to get to school.

A baseline estimate of 2098 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions was saved by students walking and riding to school between February and August this year - a staggering amount!

2098 tonnes is equivalent to nearly 42 million black balloons, or to the annual average output of approximately 175 Victorian households.

Emissions savings were calculated on the basis of students walking or riding an average of one kilometre to and from school once a week. The real figure is much higher, as many active students travel longer distances to school, and most more frequently.

The Hands Up! active travel count recorded nearly 137,490 active students from 388 registered schools.

With results like these, schools should think about applying for the monthly Telstra Environment Award. There's $2000 a month available in every state for anyone 'making their mark in preserving our world'. We know you are busy - so we've made some suggestions about information you could include in this version of the Award application form.

Ride2School congratulates schools, teachers, students, parents and local communities for actively saving the planet!
