5. Guy Leech - Ambassador of NSW Ride2School program
About this page
Guy Leech was announced as the ambassador of the NSW Ride2School program at Kurnell Public School. Over 100 children rode their bikes into school and many more came on their scooters, skateboards and on foot to celebrate Guy’s visit.
“Choosing to ride your bike, scooter, skateboard or walk rather than sit in the car is a fantastic way to get active, keep strong and have fun” says Guy, “Being involved in the Ride2School program is an excellent way to promote healthy and active living to your students.”
Guy has won an amazing seven Uncle Toby’s Iron Man Championships - an event many believed to be the ultimate test of fitness. He won the Australian Marathon swimming race and represented his country in still-water swimming. In 1994 Guy was crowned Australia’s fittest athlete by the Australian Institute of Sport over elite athletes from high profile sports.
Guy recently founded his "World of Fitness" company and now helps others to get fit. He feels very passionately about Australia and is doing all he can to address the health issues that are affecting children and adults in this country – including obesity and heart disease.
Guy’s association with Ride2School highlights the program’s ability to improve student health through increasing physical activity levels. Incorporating habitual physical activity into daily life at a young age is crucial for a healthy, active future into adulthood.
In support of the Ride2School program, Guy will be visiting schools that make a significant contribution to the promotion and awareness of active travel.
The Ride2School program in NSW is moving from strength to strength. The latest Hands Up! survey questioned over 1500 students, showing 38% choosing some form of active travel to get to and from school. Individual schools are reaping the benefits of their involvement in the program; Vincentia High School saw an increase from 13% in May to 21% of students choosing active travel in June!
