Teachers learn how to Ride2School

About this page

The Ride2School team hosted its first ever Professional Development day on February 26th. A group of teachers, and a few representatives from local government, filled the Board Meeting Room at Bicycle Victoria to learn about how to develop a Ride2School program at their setting. They all went away eager to implement lots of new ideas.

During the day the group heard about how and why the Ride2School program was developed.

They heard two first hand case studies from schools where Ride2School has had a powerful impact. There was plenty of discussion of how to run successful Ride2School events, and the sharing of ideas which have got more students walking and riding. There was a discussion of the main barriers to active travel, and some strategies to overcome these were developed.

Each participant prepared a Ride2School action plan to be applied at their school.

The participants will later have the opportunity to work with a Ride2School Schools Coordinator to help implement some of the planned strategies.

Each participant left the session loaded with plenty of ideas and enthusiasm (as well as a showbag of Ride2School merchandise). "It was a really interesting day", said Matt Shakespeare of Ashwood School. "I picked up lots of ideas I can apply straight away, and a few longer term things I can work on."

This pilot will be assessed during Term 2 to inform the next step for Ride2School's professional development. Teachers should keep an eye on ride2school.com.au for details.
