Quiet Neighbourhood Routes
About this page
Many people do not realise that the best route to ride or walk is likely to be different from the best route to drive. Follow the oulined steps, download the DIY document and develop quiet neighbourhood routes to your school .
1. Contact your council or the DOE to see if they can produce a GIS map (dot map). Usually someone from the GIS unit in council can do this or speak to the Traffic Safety Department.

2. Obtain the students addresses in an Excel spreadsheet. Your school will already have this information in an Excel spreadsheet. Remove names to protect student privacy and forward this excel file onto the council or DOE contact.
| STKEY | HOME_GROUP | ADDRESS02 | ADDRESS03 |
|---|---|---|---|
| ADA0052 | 02M | 68 Balcombe Avenue | MT MARTHA |
| ADA0055 | 02D | 68 Balcombe Avenue | MT MARTHA |
| BRI0009 | 00W | 37 STRACHANS ROAD | MORNINGTON |
| BRO0007 | 03C | 33 Kooyonga Grove | MORNINGTON |
3. The council will produce a GIS map free of charge and post it to you.
4. Using the melways/town maps and the information on the GIS map start plotting your routes. Refer to the DIY Quiet Neighbourhood Routes document for instructions on how to do this.
5. Ride the routes that you have proposed during peak school traffic time, making appropriate changes. There may be a route or two which you can not recommend immediately due to safety concerns.
6. Recommend infrastructure changes to council for future routes which can be introduced at a later time.
7. Plot your Quiet Neighbourhood Routes on a map. This can be done by colour scanning the town/suburb map. In Adobe Photoshop use the drawing tool to mark the routes. One map shows all of the routes, then individual maps show each route.

8. Create instruction sheets and insert the marked map into it. One sheet for the overall instructions for the routes and an extra sheet for each route. See Wales St Primary example.
9. Display the routes at reception and put onto the school website.
10. Launch the routes with a Ride2School Day event, inviting parents, acouncil representative and the local paper to be part of the morning. Teachers, parents and students meet at the start of the routes and make there way into school together. A healthy breakfast on arrival is a great way to top off the event. Hastings Primary had a great launch.
11. Continue to promote the Quiet Neighbourhood routes.
