Holy Rosary's new Pedal Pod

About this page

On Thursday 13th June, Minister for Health, Bronwyn Pike and Cr Fraser Brindley from the City of Melbourne launched a new 'pedal pod' at Holy Rosary Primary School in Kensington.

The new ‘transport initiative with a difference' requires no fuel, is environmentally friendly and runs on time. It also reduces traffic congestion around local schools, provides physical activity for children and requires no ticket.

Based on the Walking School Bus, children in a Pedal Pod ride instead of walk to and from school in small groups on a regular basis. The Pedal Pod features an adult 'head' at the front, an adult 'tail' at the back and up to eight students riding in the middle. The Pod rides along a set route, collecting children at designated stops as it travels to school. Best of all it’s free!

Launching the Program, Ms Pike said “teaching children the importance of ‘active travel’ early in life establishes healthy patterns of behaviour”.

The Pedal Pod program is an initiative of VicHealth who are aiming to increase the percentage of children walking and cycling to school from 20% in 2003 to 35% by 2009.   To develop the Pedal Pod program VicHealth went to the experts – Bicycle Victoria. The guide is available on VicHealth’s website.

Fiona Burnes, the YMCA’s Walking School Bus and Pedal Pod co-ordinator, helped establish the Pedal Pod. She said “the YMCA is eager to expand that program across Melbourne to encourage children to return to their bikes as a way to stay active and get to school”.
