2. Sustainable Bike Shed Grants - 2008 applications now open!
About this page
Dream bike sheds can become a reality for two more schools in 2008 through the Ride2School Sustainable Bike Shed Grants. Applications now open.
Bike sheds can dramatically increase the number of students riding to school - and help the environment at the same time. Your school can build on the sustainability aspects of more students riding to school by incorporating other features into your new bike shed.
Ride2School can help you with a $14,500 Sustainable Shed grant.
These features might include using the roof area to harvest rainwater then using the water to nurture the school vege patch, or perhaps the roof could hold solar collectors, or maybe the shed incorporates a composting worm farm. You might be getting the school and local community involved in the design and building of the shed - the possibilities are limited only by your imagination.
Download the application criteria and form to see if your school could get use from the 2008 Sustainable Bike Shed Grant program.
In 2007, Ride2School with the support of the Sustainability Fund awarded $15,000 each to Ashby Primary School and Staughton College to construct sustainable bike storage facilities.
With 45% of all Staughton's students either riding or walking on National Ride2School Day, the shed is already being put to good use!
The shed, the adjacent herb and vegetable garden and water wise garden were built during the 2007-08 summer school holidays by students undertaking a Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) course.
A water tank for the vegetable garden was installed at the same time, contributing to the project's sustainability features.
