2007 Portfolio Partners Around the Bay in a Day

Participating in Australia's premier challenge ride? Find out how Members benefit.

Training Programs are up and running for Bicycle Victoria Members:

The Portfolio Partners Around the Bay in a Day Active Sport Programs are designed to prepare you for a ride of 50, 100 or 210 kilometres in day.

Designed by experienced cyclist and former iron man triathlete Dr Michael McCoy, these programs let you choose a training schedule depending on:

  • Your level of experience (starter or progression);
  • The time you have available in the lead-up to the ride (six or 13 weeks for training); and
  • The distance you plan to ride (50, 100 or 210 kilometres)

Bicycle Victoria Members have access to the full program as part of their Membership. Fitness2live has information on events, training and nutrition advice, calculators and more.

Insurance, the different ways you can be covered:

Be it for racing, training or enjoyment. Bicycle Victoria Membership covers you anytime you ride, which we are all grateful for when something unexpected happens.

Your Self:
If you are riding on the roads, TAC will cover any accident (no matter who’s fault) involving a motor vehicle for personal injuries. There are excesses and conditions that apply, but its great to know TAC are there if you are on the roads.

Bicycle Victoria membership also covers personal injury and has lower excesses for some entitlements than TAC as well as Private Health Cover. Have a look to see how it relates to you:

Personal Injury insurance includes such benefits as loss of weekly earnings, non-Medicare medical entitlements (including dental, physio and chiro), capital benefits and more.

Your Bike:
Call your house and contents insurance company and ask about when they cover bikes and if it is covered outside of the home for damage and theft? There are H&C insurances out there that do.

Bicycle Victoria membership doesn’t cover your bike, but we can provide you with legal assistance if you believe someone else was at fault.

Other people and property:
Liability cover also hides in most House and Contents insurance, however it is also included in Bicycle Victoria membership for those instances where you are at fault for someone else’s injuries or property damage. Excesses apply to all, but different depending on whom you go through.

Clearways and Campaigns:

As riders we all want to be able to focus on the ride, not worry about parked or moving cars. During the past year we have been approaching councils to acknowledge this issue on Route 33: Beach Road. Many improvements and steps forward have occured:

  • Council supported consultation with the community regarding the introduction of weekend no stopping bans along the whole length of Beach Road, from 6am to 10am on Saturdays and Sundays.  This is in accordance with the Route 33 (Elwood to Mordialloc) Proposed Weekend Mornings No Stopping Bans report (June 2006).
  • Regional Cycling Reference Group formed to investigate potential improvements to cycling along Route 33 passed the following resolution: To improve the operation and safety of cycling along Route 33 (Bay St, Port Melbourne to Mordialloc roundabout) and make it a premier cycling boulevard by minimising the conflict between bicycles & motor vehicles.
  • A positive step forward in what has been a long process. Now Bayside Council needs to make its final decision to approve the clearways, as residents support the proposal and it is currently being presented to council for final consideration (June 2007).
