Mayor of London's School Cycle Parking Programme
About this page
The Mayors long term target for London is a 200% increase in cycling by 2020 (on 2001 levels). One way he hopes to achieve this is by providing bike shelters for schools.
As part of the Mayor’s Children Strategy and working towards a target of increasing cycling levels in the Capital London’s Mayor Ken Livingstone launched a new programme to fund, procure and install modern cycle parking at schools and colleges throughout the Greater London Area.
The programme addressed a clear demand for modern cycle parking facilities at schools and colleges, which was consistently made at the Mayor’s young people’s transport forums. The demand was driven by under-provision at the time, with very few schools having cycle parking facilities, and very few boroughs taking up funding opportunities to provide them. The overall goal was to raise the level of cycling to school from just less than 1%.
The Mayor’s School Cycle Parking programme was launched June 19 2003, with a target of installing 5000 spaces by the end of 2005.
The facilities not only inspired an enthusiasm for cycling amongst the students but fuelled support for cycling amongst the teachers, schools and local authorities. Teachers were determined and confident that cycling numbers will increase not only among the students, but amongst themselves too.
