Ensuring they are safe on the road

About this page

As a parent or guardian you are a role model for your child's riding. Riding with you and observing your road behaviour will have a great influence on your child's own road behaviour. Here's some ideas.

Riding with your child is a great opportunity for some one on one time with them.
The more you ride with them the more you can be
satisfied that they are competent and obey the road rules.

Ride on footpaths with your child. In Victoria, children up to 12 years old
and accompanying adults can legally ride on footpaths.

Ride behind your child to observe if they are obeying the road rules.

Know the additional road rules for cyclists. Teach your child the
Road Rules and reinforce them and test them.

Make sure your child’s school does Bike Ed. You can also be a Bike Ed assistant.

Always insist that they always wear a helmet. Helmets are compulsory
for all bike riders in Australia.

Check their bike.

Teach your child to ride

If you don’t know how to ride, you can learn or find a Riding School
