Based on a simple gable roofed carport, the shed can accommodate more than 100 bikes if need be. As a bonus, one side of the shed doubles as ‘Sun-Smart’ seating for students on lunch break. The rear of the shed has a separate entrance and is used as storage for sporting equipment and as a lock up for their Water Safety trailer.
Using a bike shed for more than just one purpose makes a lot of sense. Other shared options include a potting or garden shed, a recycling depot,a composting station or even a worm farm. Make sure though, that the bike shed locks separately from the other areas, and that there is good access for the many different users.
Rosebud Primary’s bike shed also features concrete reinforcing wire for fencing, donated by a parent. This was chosen over cyclone mesh fencing, as it is harder to cut open. Keeping the shed see-through was also important to allow teachers on yard duty to keep an eye on students at play. Solid walls create blind spots and tempt out-of-school-hours visitors to break in and find out what’s inside.
The school chose to use Triathlete style rails as a parking option, but Bicycle Victoria believes flat top style rails are a more effective way to park and lock bicycles. See our website for details.

Chris Hanslow, the school’s business manager, is very proud of the bike shed. The school funded the shed without outside help, and often receives inquiries from other schools wanting to find out more.
The School’s asphalt area also features painted ‘Figure 8’s’ and ‘Turning Boxes’ that are used in Level 2 of the VicRoads' Bike Ed program, which is undertaken by the Grade Fives and Sixes. As a celebration for graduating from Bike Ed, the Grade Fives enjoy an all day riding excursion to Portsea and back, testing their skills and stamina on the road, and enjoying the fun and freedom of riding their bikes.
