Riders' Rights
If you are knocked off your bicycle by a passenger alighting a taxi, is it the taxi driver or the passenger who is responsible?
Legal advice could cost you hundreds or even thousands of dollars if you are not a Member.
Your rights on the road are not obvious. Bicycle Victoria Members are entitled to free comprehensive legal advice and education. Our partner firm Maurice Blackburn provide Members with privileged access to their legal services, offering highly regarded expertise in TAC, property damage and public liability claims. If needed, our Riders' Rights Officer can liaise with Maurice Blackburn on your behalf. Please note, if you become a Member after an accident you will still be eligible for this service.
Answers from experts
Bicycle Victoria legal fact sheets are great educational items to reference and are available to Members through Blink. Members can also send us legal questions at any time. Do you have a question about your rights whilst riding? Send us an email and our Riders' Rights Officer will find you the answer.
Dealing with Loss or Grief
Although we don't provide grief counselling, Members can access further information on the National Association for Loss and Grief (NALAG) and related services contact details. Each year in Victoria we remember those lost to us through road trauma through supporting the 'Time of Remembrance'.
Become a member of Bicycle Victoria today and let us uphold your legal rights!

More people cycling more often
Our mission, our vision, our cause. How you can help.
A fantastic example of the value of Bicycle Victoria membership is the October 2006 VicRoads completion of the $14 million bike path, The Federation Trail.
This path will encourage, support and nurture bike riders for the next 50 years. It is impossible to calculate the benefits to the individuals and the community from a project like this.
How did members help?
* Kept the idea alive when the route was threatened with sale
* Spoke up when local opposition threatened to stop the plan
* Wrote letters when the money couldn't be found
* Wrote again when the project stalled at the last minute
We don't claim all the credit, many contributed to this success, but there is no doubt without the Membership of Bicycle Victoria this project would have failed.
Even if you don't like 'politics', your membership helps us speak with authority on behalf of riders in private conference and in public to the media.
Members also contribute their time and expertise to the programs we run, including Ride2School and Ride to Work. Members are often the workplace coordinators who make Ride to Work Day happen.
What's the benefit to me?
Although you may not directly benefit from each project (such as the Federation Trail), there are many other projects that you will benefit from. You also receive the satisfaction of being part of something that changes your world, such as:
* Riding a new bike route
* Improving students abilities to ride and walk to school
* Improving existing infrastructure and facilities
* Providing more safe bike parking in public places
* Raising the profile of bike riding nationally and in your local community
* Encouraging more people to ride to work
Together we can make a substantial difference to get more people cycling more often.
How can I be involved as a Bicycle Victoria Member?
* Surveys
* Emails to ministers and councils
* Writing letters to ministers and councils
It's our intention to make these relevant to you as a bike rider and to the area (postal / municipality / state) in which you ride. Your voice and opinion in all these activities influence decision makers and give us the power to go to councils to voice your concerns and make proposed changes a reality.
How will you hear about these developments?
We will email you directly with calls to action to contact councils in your postal area / municipality / state. We will also include information on what is happening in the riding world and where Bicycle Victoria's 'voice' is needed within In The Loop.
