Albany

Albany’s southern style is natural and surprisingly sassy. Wander down York Street, where colourful street banners breeze about in the salty air and buildings dated back to Western Australia’s first settlement are framed by the blue hues of Princess Royal Harbour. Yachts Race by, whales slip in for some respite on the ocean journey for breeding each year. Sealions sunbathe on the seaside granite, tummies up, fins tapping to the rumble of the tide, while further around the coast, the white sand beach runs for miles before dipping back into a secluded cove.

The historic façade of many buildings make way for surprising style and variety for shoppers. Baskets of giftware, wagons of cushions and fresh local produce can be seen and bought street side. Big name fashions are hand picked for boutiques and book shops jostle for space along side surf stores. There are cafes, galleries and landscaped public spaces open for your enjoyment. You can mosey into the country style of life and shop like the locals at the farmers markets or because it’s a holiday, why not try a different café each morning for breakfast and tackle the restaurants and bars for lunch and dinner.

There is personality to the produce in the Great Southern. Vineyards open up on hillside close by town and you are invited to drop in, talk to the producers and taste premium wines. You may also come by some local arts and crafts inspired by the rich natural and cultural values of the area.

Albany is full of free parking and is easily bicycled on scenic trails suitable to all levels. Bikes can be hired at Middleton beach and free cycle maps outlining many great cycle routes are found at the Albany Visitor Centre.

Accommodation options are aplenty and the natural shape of the landscape here means that you are lucky enough to get close to the city attractions and ocean from most areas of town. The views around Albany are incredible from many outposts!

The bold natural features of Albany and the Great Southern are a must-see and not just simply for a photograph. Rugged mountain ranges and steep coastal faces, underwater caves and forested national parks can be accessed for sightseers and can take on a truly exciting experience for those who want to get in on the action

Enjoy Amazing Albany on your next break.
