About this page
Be touched by nature
Wade De Campo, President of the Shire of Manjimup warmly welcomes participants of the 2009 Great Escapade - Western Australia cycling through the Southern Forests. The Shire is rich in history
recently celebrating 100 years of Local Government and encompasses the townships of:
- Manjimup (established 1910)
- Northcliffe (established 1924)
- Pemberton (established 1925) and
- Walpole (established 1933)
... with the smaller communities of Deanmill, Palgarup, Quinninup, Windy Harbour and Nyamup situated within the boundaries.
The Manjimup Shire covers an area approximately 7028 square kilometres with a population in the vicinity of 10,000. With around 140 kilometres of pristine coastline, great stands of karri and jarrah forests, Bibbulmun Track and the Walpole Wilderness, the Southern Forests region creates the perfect backdrop for a booming tourist industry.
Horticulture, agricultural and timber industries form the economic backbone of the area. However, viticulture is now well established and a burgeoning Truffle industry is developing.
