Councils Supporting the Ride
About this page
We continue to work closely with all Councils en route to increase the riders enjoyment on the day of the event.
How can you get your Council involved?
Bicycle Victoria has actively been seeking local Council support in an effort to make the rider route more friendly for riders and general road users. As the event is conducted on public roads we do not have many road closures on the rider route. We have invited Councils to become part of the event by working with us to provide pre-event communication and in-kind traffic management support by way of the following.
- Bicycle Victoria acknowledge and is working hard behind the scenes seeking improvements ot the rider route. For example we are seeking to extend existing clearways along certain sections of the rider route.
- For use to achieve this, we need to support of our major stakeholders Vic Roads as well as the Councils before we could implement changes to the existing Clearways and for the removal of some Parking Zones along specific sections of the rider route on the day of the event.
- Bicycle Victoria has strongly been encouraging Councils to inspect the rider route and undertake road sweeping prior to the event to remove any obstacles or debris.
- Ensure adequate communication mechanisms are in place to ensure any road works or road maintenance programs along the rider route are kept to a minimum in the lead up to the event.
- Assist us with pre-event communication through existing council avenues such as websites, local paper advertisements, letter drops, internal council communication and through local community groups
- Provide in-kind traffic support through the use of Variable Message Sign Boards and the strategic placement of pre-event signage within the Council precinct.
The introduction of the above support on the other Bicycle Victoria rides, such as the Great Victorian Bike Ride has resulted in an increased awareness of the respective events and a positive change for both driving and riding habits. We look forward to making the same changes for our event through the support of the local Councils.
As you train for the event you will be riding along the rider route. You effectively become part of our team and our eyes en route. Should you see any areas around the rider route that requires attention such as damaged to the road surface ie potholes, we would encourage you to report this to the local council for their attention. This is one way we can ensure that our event remains in the forefront of their attention.
Council Support to Date:
Hobsons Bay City Council
We would like to welcome back the Hobsons Bay City Council who are sponsors of the 50km Ride - Altona Beach Break. They have been a proactive supporter of this event and we would like to encourage all councils to be like them.
Hobsons Bay assist us by sweeping the rider route, provide us with the use of variable message boards and co-ordinate all the activities at the Pier Street, 'Altona Beach Break' for the 50km Ride.
Wyndham City Council
We would like to acknowledge the support from the council as they have been proactive and have agreed to sweep the rider route through their precinct.
Reporting Road Conditions to Statutory Authorities
As a rider training for the event and during the event should you find sections of road surface that requires attention such as clearing debris off the road or in the shoulders or repairing potholes we encourage you to report this to the relevant council and / or Vic Roads. By reporting this to the relevant statutory body this will draw this to their attention and increase the importance of ensuring the road surface is cleared of debris for bike riders in general.
