All you need to know about the ride that takes you up the eastern side of Port Phillip Bay.

The Around the Bay team are proud to announce bean ground & drunk as the new naming rights sponsor for the 100km ride option.

 

bean ground & drunk is also the official coffee supplier for Around the Bay. You can taste their delicious coffee during the Melbourne Cycling Festival held at Alexandra Gardens 16-18 Oct.

 

Route - 100km S-M

  • The Ride takes you along the eastern side of Port Phillip Bay, commencing at Sorrento and finishing back at Alexandra Gardens in Melbourne.

Code of Conduct

Riders are responsible for following all road rules and are expected to share the road with other users.  Riders must adhere to the Code of Conduct at all times.

Transport to Sorrento

During registration you have the option to choose the provided transport from Melbourne to Sorrento for $50. This is non-refundable. Complete your registration, and login closer to the event when you are certain that you would like to choose this option. This must be done by 5pm Thursday 8 October.

Transport loading will be commence from 5.00am until 6.00am, when the last bus will leave. Loading will take place from the Public Bus Zone, opposite the Arts Centre in the southbound side of St Kilda Road (Mel 2F H7). *Subject to change. We will post a map on this page shortly.

Although it is not essential, you may wish to pre-pack your bike in a disposable (cardboard) bike box. 

All bikes will need to have both pedals removed (this is to protect other bikes when packing them onto the trucks), and handlebars turned parallel to the bike. Please remove any water bottles, lights or other removable objects, as they may dislodge in transit. There will be some Volunteer Riding Marshals here to assist you and at Sorrento to help put the bike back together.

Please Note:

We recommend that you loosen up your pedals and head stem prior to arriving, as this will speed up the loading progress and make it easier on the day.

Private Drop-offs to Sorrento

Road closures will be in place on Point Nepean Road from Hughes Road (Mel 157 F12).  We recommend that you use Melbourne Road if you are coming from Melbourne.  Riders can be dropped off on Melbourne and Hothams Roads.  Check the map for details.

Start Location and Time

Sorrento Foreshore near St Paul Road from 8.00am until 8.45am.  See the map for the official starting location.  Please note that all riders are legally required to have both front and back lights if you are riding before or after sunrise.

Rest Areas

Rest Areas are located at approximately every 25km along the Ride in the following locations:

  • Sorrento Ferry Terminal, Sorrento (Melway 157 B7)#
  • Dromana Foreshore (opposite Permien St), Dromana (Melway159 F7)
  • Frankston Foreshore opposite the Caltex Service Station on Nepean Highway, Frankston (Melway 102 B3)#
  • Peter Scullin Reserve, Mordialloc (Melway 92 E1)#
  • Alexandra Gardens (Melway 2F J7)#

Note: # Red Cross First Aid Posts will be set up at these rest areas.

We will provide you with access to water at the rest areas.  There are opportunities to purchase drinks and food along the route in case you need additional nutrition.

Bib Information

  • Bibs MUST be visible and worn at all times during the ride. 
  • Each rider will be given two bibs - one to be worn high on your chest and one to be worn on your back. 
  • The front bib has one tear off section.  Redeem this section for lunch.  You will not receive lunch without your bib information.
  • You must complete the emergency information on the back of your bibs.
  • You will also be identified for photos by your bib, so it is important that it is clearly visible.

Lunch

Lunch will be provided at two locations and is pre-selected at the time of your registration.  You may change your lunch pick up location up until the Monday 31 August.

1. En route at Peter Scullin Reserve, Mordialloc rest area (approx 68km Mark) OR

2. Alexandra Gardens at the finish site. 

You must be able to provide the tear off section from your bib in order to receive your lunch.

Many riders find they are pretty hungry by the time they get to Mordialloc, so if you are not sure which Lunch location to select choose Mordialloc.

Other Information

  • Sag Wagons will be operating all day to provide support for riders who have mechanical problems or are unable to continue riding. They will offer to take you to the nearest railway station to enable you to organise transport home or the nearest rest area.
  • Marshals are located throughout the route to provide directions and assistance at busy intersections, roundabouts and similar locations.
  • Red Cross are the official First Aid providers and will be located at all the major Rest Areas. 

Reporting Incidents

Report all incidents to the nearest marshal including hazards (potential or otherwise) or accidents.  If there is an emergency on the route, call either of the emergency numbers on the back of your bibs which are:

PLEASE NOTE:

  • You should be prepared for any type of weather conditions on the day. 
  • For the 100km, 80km and 50km Ride Options – the Rider must be aged 12 years or older on the day of the Ride.
