Route Marshals Team
Marshals provide information to Route Operations via radio, on weather conditions, number of Riders in their area and anything else out of the ordinary. They assist riders to have a safe and enjoyable Ride by helping them through difficult turns and obstacles along the route. Marshals also offer encouragement and support (and the odd joke) to Riders.
People who are First Aid qualified are extremely handy for this position. Long periods of being on your feet can be involved, so a creative sense of humour is a must! Route Marshals must be Sunsmart.
Route Operations Team
This Team is situated in vehicles stationed on the route and looks after cyclists via radio contact with other Teams. They record and direct all movements of vehicles and personnel on the route, to ensure that the flow is smooth. They are the contact for alerting local authorities where required. Route Operations can have long days and should be level headed, dedicated people who can work in demanding situations. An interview is a must, so sign up early for this one!
Sag Wagon Team
This Team contains two teams of two, each in a mini-bus with a trailer, that follows the tail-end of the Riders and is ready to pick up any tired riders or damaged bikes. Ability to use radios is required as the Sag Wagon is regularly in touch with Route Operations. Current driver’s licence and confidence in driving a minibus and trailer for extended periods alongside riders is required.
Signs Team
This Team ensures that Riders make it from town to town without losing their way. They’re responsible for putting out all 2009 Great Escapade road signage along the Ride Route. The Signs Team begin very early in the morning (approximately 4.30am) and finish by collecting the signs once the Sag Wagon has swept the Route (late evening), leaving time for a well-deserved rest and nap in the middle of the day. A great way to catch spectacular sunrises too!!
