Ride2School Champions

Ride2School Champions are members of the school community who have shown initiative, leadership and dedication to waving the Ride2School flag

Name: Sandro Biscaro
School: Epping Secondary College
Active travel mode: Old steel single speed

Role at the school: Health and Physical Education teacher and Ride2School Coordinator.

Each morning, Sandro Biscaro meets a former teaching colleague and sets off on his daily commute on his trusty single speed.  Bike riding is a passion as well as a convenience for Sandro.

Being motivated to enhance the health and wellbeing of his students, Sandro works with the Ride2School team to develop secondary school material in an effort to make bike riding for teenagers more appealing. Sandro describes the 'cool factor' as being the biggest challenge to getting more secondary students riding.  "Being a teenager means looking the part and not getting hot and sweaty", says Sandro.  " Wearing a helmet on your commute to school often means helmet hair and you will probably get a bit hot and bothered'.

Sandro strongly believes that local councils should investigate more traffic calming measures as parents need to feel the routes their children take are safe.  Parents (and teachers) themselves can assist students to ride to school by following his lead and " walking the talk".
