The April-May edition of Ride On will be available in newsagents Australia-wide from April 1.

While Bicycle Network Victoria members receive Ride On free as part of their membership benefits, Ride On magazine is also on sale in newsagents Australia-wide at a cost of $7.95. The 84-page April-May edition will be on sale from April 1. Highlights include feature articles on:

If the lycra fits . . .

An “anti-lycra brigade” is rebelling against our “lycra mentality” according to an article in The Age online, Sunday 19 December 2010. The article went on to label slow-cycling enthusiasts as “cyclists who ride for the sheer enjoyment of it”, implying, as the article continues, that those of us who ride for fitness only do so under some kind of grudging obligation.

My question to these people is: what can possibly be the benefit in turning cyclists against cyclists, and ultimately, adding further fuel to the fire of a handful of drivers who hate us? Lycra wearers are maligned enough already, without further promoting the view that it's okay to ride a bike, so long as it's a low-end one and you're dressed down for it.

I ride a road bike and I wear lycra; mainly for comfort for the time I spend on the bike. My ride to work is part of my fitness training, and I do it as fast as I possibly can, within the bounds of safety and respect for other road/trail users. I make no apology for it.

And, believe it or not, going fast and feeling fit add up to “sheer enjoyment” for me. In fact, it's “chill-out time” for me as well, when I can think through the day's upcoming dilemmas with fresh air and a clear head.

Slow cyclists could include my wife and kids. Everyone is welcome. Go as slow as you like. Keep to the left and I'll pass you, safely, after a bell or a call of “passing”. More slow cyclists means More People Cycling More Often, and that can only be a good thing for us all.
