Riding Byron Bay

Byron Bay is synonymous with hippies, blues music and surfers. But as Sue Webber finds, the many bike paths surrounding the town make it a great destination for people wanting to ride off into the sunset.

A waft of coffee drifts out of a beachside cafe, mingling with the smell of incense and salt air. The busy town of Byron Bay is a blend of Australian cultures: situated on a headland at the easternmost point of the country, the town has long been a gathering point for yuppies, tourists and backpackers. With the financial crisis pushing people to holiday in Australia, the town has seen an increase in tourism.

With lush countryside perfect for riding, Byron Bay is set to become an ideal getaway for bike riders. A ride through the Northern Rivers region is a way to experience the easy rhythm of the area. While Byron Bay itself is too crowded to be bike friendly, I was impressed by the cycle rickshaw pedalling passengers around. I didn’t see any other road bikes, but there was an assortment of beach cruisers and surfer bikes, with riders carrying boards back from the beach.
