Bikes on trains ban

Letters to Bicycle Network Victoria about the ban of bikes on trains in early 2008

Apology accepted

10 Feb 08

I have just read your apology re: "Public transport and bikes". As a PT worker and an avid cyclist, I am close to both sides of the argument.

I was a little disappointed with BV's stance on this matter, but was very impressed with the well worded apology. It's easy to "run and hide" when the proverbial hits the fan, but in this case, you've taken the criticism on the chin and come right out and said "We got it wrong". Well done. Smart move on your part, as I now have more respect for you as an organisation.

Let's keep working together to get more people cycling more often!

Advocacy not passivity

I'm still a bit disappointed in BV's response to the bikes on trains ban.

Especially: "When the overcrowding issue on trains is solved we can then approach the Public Transport Division to request that the current peak-period restrictions are lifted.". How about something a bit more pro-active?

If BV said "When the overcrowding on roads is solved ... we'll ask for bike lanes" I don't think we'd have many bike lanes.

Someone's missed the point

6 Feb 08

If I have read right and you support the ban of bicycles on peak hour trains, I think that you are missing the point.

The problem is not bikes on trains, the problem is the underfunding of public transport in Victoria over the last 20 years.

As an individual member, I would expect the peak body for cyclists in Victoria to oppose this ban, campaign for better public transport and most importantly, to facilitate and organise the BV membership into taking action against the government.

Anything less is to let the Government off the hook.
