Part of the critical western spine needed to link the western suburbs into Footscray Central Activity District and beyond to the Melbourne CBD.

Sunshine to Footscray link commitment needed

06 July 2010 In 2008 Maribyrnong and Brimbank Councils commissioned a joint consultant's study to identify a feasible alignment for a path between Sunshine and the almost completed Ashley St to West Footscray path.

The report, finalised in 2009,  revealed there are few physical challenges with a wide parcel of land available on the northern side of the rail corridor. What is needed now is a commitment from Minister Pakula to invoke the State Government's 'mainstreaming' commitment to provide bike facilities as a matter of course as part of all large road and rail projects. This has already been committed to on the Epping to South Morang rail extension and thus we believe the Sunshine corridor project is worthy of the same commitment.

The route was first identified as part of the State Government's Victorian Cycling Strategy and the Department of Transport has already funded the Ashley to West Footscray Section, currently being delivered by Maribyrnong Council. Since that time VicRoads has also identified the route as part of the Principle Bicycle Network review, currently underway.

To maximise the return on this investment it is vital that this path be better connected at both ends.
