May 2010 Darebin Council has started works on improving Cramer St as part of a $900,000 program of streetscape enhancements for Cramer Street, Preston. This section is indicated in red on the map above.
'Preston Connect' (detailed plan available here) will comprise a series of upgrades in 2010 for pedestrians and cyclists along Cramer Street near Preston Markets.
The project has received $430,000 Victorian Government funding, matched by Darebin City Council.
Medians will be built into sections of the road to provide a safe refuge for pedestrians crossing Cramer Street combined with improved bike lanes to go continuously from the railway crossing to High St.
Council has stated "The project will be delivered in two stages. Stage 1 will include: - Construction of road medians for pedestrian refuge along with tree planting at designated sections - Widening of the bicycle lane on the north and south side - Reduced traffic lanes to allow for the road medians and wider bicycle lanes - Creation of turning lanes between the medians to access key destinations to the north and south of Cramer Street. Stage 2 will include: - New footpaths and street furniture - Upgrade to the main access and gateway of the Preston City Oval - Raised pedestrian crossings. Stage 1 will be delivered by 30 June 2010 and stage two by the end of 2010".
