North: La Trobe Uni/Macleod Station path

La Trobe University is a suburban, car-based campus. Efforts are underway to reduce car dependency and improve access for bikes. Much needs to be done.

Station link to La Trobe Uni now open

5 May 2009. A new route, which aims to link Macleod Station with La Trobe University was officially opened in April. A joint venture of Darebin and Banyule Councils and La Trobe, the project was also part-funded by the LAAP program.

The route starts at the western side of the railway and heads uphill via Joynt Street. The route is delineated by bike symbols but does not offer any other on-road facilities. Before reaching the newly-built 3m path, the route has to cross Waiora Road. At Forensic Drive, the start of the new path provides easy access down into the university precinct.

Riders using the path have to cross the  university ring-road without priority and real concern exists over the speed of vehicles at this crossing. Bicycle Network Victoria is keen to see traffic calming measures put in place to address this conflict.

There is also some work to be done in reducing the potential hazard of bollards placed mid-path.

Bicycle Network Victoria also recommends installation of Parkiteer bike cages at either end of this path, to facilitate both bike and train trips.
