West: Bay Trail West

The Bay Trail when completed will run from the National Park at Point Nepean on the east side of Port Phillip Bay to the Werribee River in the west. The western section starts at the Yarra and follows the Bay to Williamstown and then south and west towards the Werribee River.

Bay Trail West at West Gate Bridge closed for works

28 September 2010. There will be another temporary closure of Hyde Street and the parallel Bay Trail from 29 September to 19 October between 9.30am -2.30pm, excluding Sundays.

Cyclists and motorists should expect delays and seek alternative routes during this time. Cyclists are advised to detour via the signed route along Hudsons Road, Williamstown Road footpaths, Francis St to Hyde St / Whitehall St. Note the roadside signs advising of closure times.

A full bridge closure will also be in place on Tuesday October 12 and 19 from 11pm -4.30am for the installation of four large gantries as part of the M1upgrade’s intelligent Freeway Management System.

The West Gate Bridge Strengthening Alliance (WGBSA) continues to undertake strengthening works. WGBSA advises that Phase one of the works is now complete and the current works will complete phase two of the carbon fibre application to the bridge and the installation of barriers onto the bridge deck.

The closures are put in place to minimise any safety risks to WGBSA workers, local motorists, cyclists and pedestrians in the area.

However it is clear that the detour arrangements are poor and not up to the standard expected on such a popular route.

We are over the creek

2 February 2010. The Bay Trail West has jumped the Skeleton Creek over a new bridge at Melway 208 F7. (See right hand panel.)

The new Point Cook suburb is being developed as the photo shows. At the moment the path ends not far beyond the bridge and at some stage the path will continue south through the Point Cook Coastal Park to the Point Cook Homestead.

Bay Trail West: New markers and maps installed

Aug 05 This fascinating part of Melbourne’s west is a surprise to many with its maritime history, coastal wetlands, and extensive views. To help navigate the trail, Hobsons Bay City Council has installed a series of trail markers and maps. Based on a nautical theme and constructed from recycled timbers, the panels on the markers tell stories of the natural and cultural history of the area.
