North: Darebin Creek Trail

The Darebin Creek runs from the north of Melbourne to the Ring Road in Bundoora (outer section). From there the creek flows south past La Trobe University to join the Yarra in Alphington (inner section). The Darebin Creek Trail is not yet continuous - see box opposite.

Nov 2010 Bridge and path works at Darebin Road and Tyler St are now complete meaning that the Darebin Creek Path is now rideable from Bundoora to Alphington.

The finished bridge at Tyler St. Thanks to member Ian Slack for the photo. Ian says: "The access from the South is now quite good but the Northern approach whilst vastly improved could have been better designed with a better approach angle."

New bridge works on Darebin

15 April 2010. The Darebin Creek path will be closed briefly at the end of the month when a new bridge is installed at Tyler Street.

The City of Darebin will close the route while the old bridge is removed an replaced.

Riders should use the alternative route via the Wood St Bridge shown in this map.

The timeline for closure is the 27th of April until the 5th of May.

Alternative route from the Wood St Bridge –
East side - along the creek path on the East side
West side – Wood St, Greenbelt Avenue, Tyler St.

More progress

The underpass and ramp up to the north side of Darebin Rd is now complete and open to ride.
The section of path north of Darebin Rd up to John Cain reserve will be complete by February 2009.

The underpass is underway

April 08 Darebin Council has approved works at Darebin Road to connect two sections of the Darebin Creek path underneath Darebin Road. Mel 31 C7 This will connect the trail from John Cain Park in the north to the Darebin Parklands.

The project is being jointly funded by the Council and Parks Victoria and will cost $759 000.

In this financial year Stage One will build a ramp to Darebin Road and a boardwalk under the bridge. This will cost $520 000. Scheduled completion in June 08.

Next financial year - and immediately after Stage One, Stage Two will construct a concrete path north to John Cain Park and associated landscaping works. This section will cost $239,000 and is scheduled for completion in October this year.
