Road bikes buck the trend.

Taiwanese road bike sales continue to soar whilst all other bike styles take a knock back during the recession.

August figures show that Taiwan is exporting far fewer of most bicycle styles to the rest of the world with the children’s bicycle market particularly hard hit, with exports of 24-inch bikes down 28 percent and 20-inch down 25 percent.

Exports of 26-inch mountain and comfort bikes are also down substantially, 13 percent, or 475,550 units.

Road bike exports are the only category to post a gain up 32 percent. This trend is a continuation of 2008 figures and shows the importance of the road bike market to the bike trade during this recession hit period. This shift in the recreation and transport market away from mountain style bikes looks set to continue for the immediate future and displays the changing popularity of bicycle styles in the consumer market.
