Political hoopla cranks up

The 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver was unprecedented: a Black American won the nomination, and delegates cycled to caucus on 1000 free bikes.

09 September 2008. In a joint promotion, the bike advocacy group Bikes Belong and the American
healthcare company Humana, provided bikes for free for use by delegates, media and adult residents during the Convention.

Bike stations were set up at locations around Denver with each housing dozens of bikes. Open from 7am to 7pm daily, they also provided maps and travel guides for visitors.

Participants had to register to use the bikes by providing a credit card and driver's license. Helmets are not required by law in Denver but organisers highly encouraged the wearing of them and they were available at all stations.

A similar program was staged in the Twin Cities during the Republican National Convention.
