This spectacular trail follows the shores of Lake Hume and offers a fantastic ride.
Sites to see along the trail include the Bonegilla Migrant Centre, which was a temporary home for 320,000 migrants from more than 30 countries between 1947 and 1971.
Getting there
Either drive the Hume Hwy to Wodonga, or catch a train between Melbourne and Sydney to Wodonga station.
Trail description
The trail is currently under construction with some sections open and ready for use. See link (right) for updates on trail development.
Trail surface
The surface varies, depending on the section and stage of development. Most of the trail is gravel and suitable for mountain bikes only, at this stage. The 9km section between Tallangatta and Mitta Mitta River bridge is sealed and suitable for all types of bikes. A separate equestrian trail means that horses rarely cross the cycling/walking trail.
Open sections & suggested rides
Blazing Stump Hotel, Bandiana to Ebden reserve (9km) - This section is suitable for mountain bikes. It requires a detour onto the Murray Valley Hwy at the Kiewa River (not making it suitable for children as the shoulder is narrow). In July 2005 work commenced to construct a bridge over the Kiewa River on the rail trail. Leave the highway at Pollards Rd to rejoin the trail. The trail passes the restored Bonegilla station and a tunnel under the highway takes riders out to the lake shore.
Ebden Reserve to Huon Reserve (9km ) - This section is suitable for mountain bikes and follows the shore of Lake Hume. Toilets and picnic areas are available at Ebden Reserve, Ludlows Reserve and Huon Reserve. The surface varies in quality, with some sections reasonably good and others quite rough. At Huon Reserve cyclists will need to use the shoulder of the Murray Valley Hwy to detour around Sandy Creek Inlet to Murrays Way.
Murray's Way to Tallangatta (8km ) - This section is suitable for mountain bikes and continues to follow the shores of Lake Hume.
Tallangatta to Old Tallangatta (9km) - This section is sealed and suitable for all types of bikes. It makes for a lovely family ride out to Mitta Mitta River and back. When the water level is low, the ruins of Old Tallangatta can be seen on the lake bed.
