Bicycle Network Victoria: Commercial Projects
Ease-of-use is critical to good bike parking
The Southern Cross building at 121 Exhibition St, Melbourne has increased its capacity with bike parking for 320 riders.
Department of Transport leads the way
The Department of Transport has been moving from its former home at Nauru House into the newly re-developed Southern Cross building at 121 Exhibition St. There were already more than 150 bike parking spaces supplied by Bicycle Network Victoria on the site, and a new dedicated space for the Department of Transport has been fitted out for nearly 170 bikes. Bicycle Network Victoria had to make significant modifications to standard specifications to maintain the ease-of-use on this sloped site.

Before: Car parking After: Vertical wall mounted bike parking
Parking on a slope
A 1:20 slope on the site meant that vertical wall mounted parking would be significantly compromised without some substantial modifications to the standard specifications. A lot of the low racks would be too low, (bikes would be resting on the ground), and the high racks would be too high (difficult for riders to reach).
Adaptor plate dissolves the slope
A customised plate (below) was fabricated to reduce the height of the racks on the down side of the steel framing, and the racks were installed slightly higher on the upside.
Adaptor plates and angled framing horizontals maintain ease-of-use on a sloped site
Modified framing
One length of steel framing (above) ran down the slope. (Steel framing is used to support the Ned Kelly bike parking rails when there is no suitable wall for attachment). The horizontal rails of the framing were installed parrallel with the floor, and as a result the bike parking spaces also followed the angle of the floor, nullifying the impact of the slope on ease of access to bike spaces.
When riders move in, they will find that ease-of-use of all bike parking spaces in the facility is high.
