Bicycle Network Victoria: Commercial Projects
ANZ Tower - Collins St Melbourne
An increase in riders meant an increase in bike parking
Riding Culture
ANZ is one of many large corporations that now make health a priority for their staff.
Group Managing Director Personal Division, Brian Hartzer and ANZ Group General Manager People Capital & Breakout, Shane Freeman are representing ANZ as National Ride to Work Day Ambassadors. Both keen cyclists, Brian and Shane are committed to building the unique ANZ culture and a workplace where employees perform at their best and "bring their whole selves to work". ANZ is committed to the well-being of its employees and playing its role in reducing its impact on the environment.
ANZ is moving its Melbourne headquarters to the Docklands in 2009. In keeping with their commitment to a healthy workforce they will provide showers, lockers and more than 270 bike parking spaces to cater for the needs of staff.
Existing Parking
ANZ Tower in Collins St Melbourne had an existing bike parking facility that didn't meet their needs. An increase in rider numbers led to a decision to increase the space allocated. In order to maximise the use of this new space they contacted the Bike Parking Experts at Bicycle Network Victoria.

The existing 'toaster' racks were removed. The access
space (area in yellow - approx 500mm) was well below
the minimum standard. This made it difficult for riders to
get in and out with their bikes.
Their existing space catered for 36 bikes, but access was extremely restricted, and the style of parking made it difficult for riders to lock their bikes. Bicycle Network Victoria re-designed the space, lifting capacity in that area to 42 bikes, and more than doubling the amount of access space for riders, so that it met the minimum standards. Capacity had to be improved further to cater for demand, and so an adjacent storage area was incorporated bringing capacity up to 68 bikes.
Choice of Designs
Bicycle Network Victoria offered ANZ a range of bike parking options for ANZ Tower. The table below shows a breakdown of the different options.
| Design 1 | Design 2 | Design 3 | Design 4 | |
| Number of bike parking spaces | 71 | 67 | 64 | 68 |
| Number of vertical wall mount spaces | 70 | 58 | 44 | 56 |
| Number of ground mount spaces | 1 | 9 | 20 | 12 |
| Cost per space* | $210 | $187 | $150 | $182 |

You can download the designs (Design 1 & 2 PDF 22KB or Design 3 & 4 PDF 21KB) to get an idea of how using different types of parking rails can offer different solutions.
Bicycle Network Victoria recommends a mixture of ground mounted parking rails and vertical wall mounted rails. Vertical wall mounted rails are the most space efficient, but some riders prefer not to lift their bikes onto them.
ANZ chose Design 4 as it met their needs in terms of the mix of the three basic variables: capacity, economy and useability.

Installation
Bicycle Victoria installed the bike parking facility in January 2007, and by mid September the bank contacted us again because demand is once again outstripping supply. Only marginal improvements in capacity can be made in this space, so they are currently looking at other spaces within the building for an additional compound.
With the encouragement bike riders receive at ANZ, this may be a recurrent theme!
