Bicycle Network Victoria: Commercial Projects
Royal Children's Hospital
The Royal Children's Hospital opened its new bicycle parking facility in early 2001
Royal Children’s’ bicycle parking enclosure open for business
The enclosure is a freestanding, fully roofed structure with chainmesh fencing, a security gate and provides parking for 65 bicycles.
Bicycle Network Victoria designed the layout and supplied the parking rails and framing.
Model for employers
The enclosure is one of the largest in Victoria and is a model for other organisations looking to provide excellent bike parking for staff.
The Hospital is located close to bike lanes in Flemington Rd and Royal Pde, which lead into the Upfield and Moonee Ponds bike paths. As a result, cycling has become a popular form of transport for the hospital’s employees.

Bicycle User Group
The need for better bike parking became apparent during 2000. With bike theft on the rise (up to one
bike per month) and existing bike parking scattered over the hospital grounds, cyclists began to store
their bikes in offices and other indoor locations. This raised Occupational Health and Safety
concerns, with bikes hindering emergency exits.
A bicycle user group, including Bicycle Network Victoria Members and former President Marienne Hibbert,
was formed to find a solution. The group contacted Bicycle Network Victoria to help design the facility.
