80 Collins Street

The keen bike riders at the Department of Transport (DOT) ushered in 2003 with a new bicycle parking facility installed by Bicycle Network Victoria. Fast forward to 2009 and rider numbers continue to grow ... as does bike parking.

80 Collins Street expands bike parking again!

Having already had the Bike Parking Experts install caged bike parking for Department of Transport and other building users, these places filled up fast. Colliers, the Building Managers are supporting cycle use and have requested an increase in the spaces to cater for increased us. This is the Bike Parking Experts' fourth installation of bike parking at 80 Collins Street!

This section of wall can be converted into 15 new bike parking spaces with the use of the Ned Kelly.

Bicycle Network Victoria staff go on site and measure potential areas for safe and efficient bike parking.

Happy Cycling New Year for DOI Staff

Located in the underground car park of 80 Collins street, the new DOI bike cage can securely park 44 bikes using Bicycle Network Victoria’s Ned Kelly wall mounted parking rails.

The DOI have exclusive use of the cage to cater for the large number of cyclists that work there. Between five and ten per cent of DOI’s 400 staff regularly ride to work. Bicycle Network Victoria had previously installed a number of racks for general use by 80 Collins street tenants. DOI had approached 80 Collins Management to provide them with a separate area, as the current number of bike racks was insufficient.

Cycling helps John to work off those extra Christmas kilos

One person who will be utilising the new parking enclosure is John Bruce, a Bicycle Network Victoria Member who
combines working for DOI while being a Manningham City Councillor.

“I like to ride to work whenever I get the chance, I’m hoping to ride in about 3 or 4 times a week
during January.”

A commuter cyclist for about 10 years, John rides 16km from Bulleen along the freeway bike path to
Dights Falls and then into the city.

John and fellow DoI cyclists check out the new bike enclosure at 80 Collins street

“Competition for parking rails can be pretty fierce in the morning with cyclists from all the
companies in 80 Collins street are trying to secure a good park. Those that miss out either lock up their
bikes in the street or against stair railings. Some people even lug their bikes up to their office floor.
The new DOI enclosure should alleviate that stress and even encourage more people to ride”.

“Cycling to work takes about the same time as public transport and gives me a chance to go over the
events of the day and to think about the day ahead. I arrive at work all set to go and I also get home
relaxed and stress free. At this time of year it’ll also help me to keep fit and work off those excess
Christmas kilos!”
