Adelaide City gets rolling
About this page
Adelaide City is responding to the bike boom, listening to riders, and committing the cash
24 September 2008. The City of Adelaide recently announced more than $3m in bike funding over the next three years.
The Council has focussed on four key areas:
- Bike lanes and trails – on street bike lanes (both primary and secondary routes) as well as Adelaide’s unique parkland trails
- Supporting infrastructure – on street bike racks, on street bike nodes (dedicated parking places on street), off street parking (self secured, secured and lockers), bike parks with amenities (showers/change areas)
- Free city bikes – free bike hire program
- Advocacy, promotions and education – council to play a leadership role for and commitment to cycling, advocating for cyclists and working with others
Bicycle SA has provided a range of advice to the Lord Mayor and Council over recent months and sees this announcement as a major step forward in realising Adelaide’s potential as a truly cycle friendly city.
Bicycle SA has congratulated the Adelaide City Council on this commitment and looks forward to challenging the state government to increase its State Bicycle Fund budgets.
Please write and thank the Adelaide Lord Mayor for this initiative.
