Victorian Government offers $5M in grants for cycling and walking projects

17 June 2008. A total of $5M is up for grabs for new sustainable transport projects in Victoria during 2008-09.
Roads and Ports Minister, Tim Pallas, has called for applications for funding in the third round of the TravelSmart and Local Area Access programs. These programs have funded some fine initiatives in recent years, including the Buckley Street underpass in Moonee Valley, the Diamond Creek Cycle Path, and the Gardiner's Creek Trail.
This is a great opportunity for cycling groups and local councils around the state to develop some great ideas for improving bike riding networks, and get them funded and built.
Mr Pallas said the Government was particularly interested in projects which encouraged existing car users to switch to sustrainable transport modes, and converting short car trips into walking, cycling or public transport travel.
The Government has committed almost $30M to extend the TravelSmart program over 10 years, and $16M for the Local Area Access Program over four years. So far almost $5.2M has been spent on 52 projects.
Councils will have to submit intitial grant applications by 30 July. The funding announcement will be at the end of October. The Department of Transport is holding information sessions across the state. Call 03 9655 4459 for details.
