S: Rumble edge bike lanes
About this page
Adding a 'rumble edge' to a bike lane improves the communication to drivers about the bicycle space.
May 08 Rathdowne St - leading out of Exhibition Street - in the CBD is the site of a trial of rumble edge bike lanes and other measures to increase the sense of separation in a standard bike lane.
The technique is called tactile edge lining by traffic engineers and is used
on high-speed regional roads including freeways to alert drivers when they stray from their lane by
creating a vibration in the vehicle.
The rumble edge on Rathdowne Street is supported by green paint and other measures.
