Bike riding can be made into a CBD commuter solution

The Premier has recently asked for new ideas to tackle congestion.

Our reply is ‘replace as many car trips as we can with bike trips’. Every bike trip that replaces a car trip, cuts traffic congestion.

We have suggested a number of initiatives including encouraging local bike trips. There are two obvious targets.

The drive to the railway station is so short the car barely has time to warm up. It makes sense to switch some of these trips to bike trips. The recent government commitment to increase bike parking at railways stations is spot on.

Walking and riding are the best ways for kids to get to school. Late in 2006 the government initiated the Ride to School program to help reinstate this practical habit. When active schools have bike sheds and can be reached by quiet neighbourhood routes, then term time traffic will ease.

This site contains our ‘commuter’ answer. We are suggesting to the Premier and the Victorian community that bike riding can be made into a CBD commuter solution.
