On-Road Loop Counters
About this page
VicRoads have started to roll out a new series of Loop counters across the inner Melbourne on-road network.
New Loops will help to capture rider data
Dec 07 New Counter Loops similar to the counter loops already present across the off-road network are being put on major on-road routes.
These loops will need to be placed so as to only capture bicycle movements and not be positioned where cars can commonly move over them. Some form of separation may be needed.
This counter was recently photgraphed on Royal Parade, one of Melbourne's busiest on-road cycling routes.
For data from the off-road sites please see: Vicroads path statistics
For the location of the off-road loop counters see: Map of Loop Counters [PDF, 103 kb]
No loops in your area?
These counters are relatively inexpensive especially when you consider they work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year. You can speak to Tony Barton, Manager - VicRoads Bicycle Program, about getting one (or more!) of these in your area to do all the hard work for you.
