Bike Polite in Edinburgh
About this page
Bike riders in Edinburgh are being urged to be more polite when riding.
A Bicycle Victoria member recently forwarded us an email regarding a 'Bike Polite' campaign in Edinburgh.
Spokes, an Edinburgh based bike riding campaign group, are encouraging bike riders to be more polite and friendly when riding their bikes.
The Bike Polite code covers four problem areas - shared paths, canal towpaths, red traffic lights and riding after dark. While we don't have canal towpaths in Australia we definitely have similar issues of sharing paths, lights on bikes at night, and behaviour at red lights.
Will be interested to see the results of the campaign. Bicycle Victoria currently runs similar campaigns:
'Light Up' aims to increase the number of riders riding at night with compliant lights and to prompt two battery changes each year by regular riders; one at the end of daylight saving and one on the shortest day.
'Share the Road' is a community road safety campaign to help drivers and cyclists use the road cooperatively. The campaign was initiated by the Victorian Bicycle Advisory Council in 2004 and is sponsored by member organisations including Bicycle Victoria, Cycling Promotion Fund, Retail Cycle Traders Association, RACV, Victoria Police and VicRoads.
'Share the Path' aims to inform riders and walkers how to share on our path network. The information is commonly displayed as a code of conduct along shared paths and rail trails.
