Carpark access for bike riders

About this page

Secure car parks are a great place for bike parking as long as bike riders can get access to the car park

Cars Only

Bicycle Victoria member David Levin had a dilemma when researching the feasibility of installing 50 new bike parking spaces at his workplace. Policy at Owen Dixon Chambers dictated that only car drivers who leased a car space could obtain a security pass to open the roller door to the car park. This ensured that there were no unauthorised cars taking allocated parking spaces.

If the new secure bike parking facility was to be installed inside the car park then there needed to be a compromise made to allow bike riders access to the car park.

Alternative access

The solution to the problem was to allow bike riders access to the pedestrian door. Their building security pass was upgraded to allow riders access to the pedestrian door via a second security reader, but their pass would not allow them access through the roller door. This meant that bike riders could now access the car park but couldn't access it with their car if they decided to drive on a wet day.

You can see in the photo below the security reader for the roller door is highlighted in yellow and the security reader for the pedestrian door is highlighted in red.

A secure bike parking room

An added benefit for bike riders was a security reader installed on their bike parking room. This restricted access to riders and building management only.

Riders run the roller door

This bike rider took advantage of the easier access and followed a car in through the roller door - rather than getting off to go through the pedestrian door. Still, the integrity of the system is maintained as it is designed to restrict access to unauthorised cars, so they do not occupy car spaces they are not entitled to, and this bike rider still needs to provide their security pass to access the bike parking facility.
