Great news for Monash Uni
Dec 07 Bicycle Victoria has received a few emails from riders regarding the off-road path. A number of points were raised by these bike riders which have been answered below.
Both an on-road lane and an off-road path on the left hand side of the road were considered by VicRoads as part of this project but were not able to be accommodated due to the upgrading of the left hand lane to a dedicated bus lane for the Route 900 Smartbus.
The commute via the path will be separated from traffic and cater for a larger number of potential riders than currently use North Rd.
The current design means that riders will have to wait for motor traffic at some intersections. We'll wait and see how the path performs to see if we need to campaign for increased priority along the route.
Oct 07 The construction of a $1.7 million off-road link between Huntingdale Train Station and Monash University is almost complete. The 2km shared path will run along the median of North Road.
You can see from the photos that this route will provide a great off-road alternative to the busy North Rd. The project is still a few months off completion but will be ready for students in the new year.
This project is part of the VicRoads Bicycle Facilities Projects Program which is expected to add about 19km of new bicycle facilities to existing networks in 2007/08.
Oct 06 There is some good news now for riders approaching from the CBD, Oakleigh and surrounds.
Peter Bachelor has just announced that VicRoads will fund an off-road link from Huntingdale Train Station to Monash University along the median of North Road. The route will give students and staff a direct route from Oakleigh in the west. Riders will be able to reach the end of the path by train or from Oakleigh South using the path alongside the Huntingdale Golf Club.
The picture above shows part of the draft concept for North Road. Monash University Bicycle User Group have been instrumental in developing the concept and campaing with Bicycle Victoria for the link.
If you have ridden on St George's Road in Northcote you will have experienced a bike route running down the median. For those who haven't, this is what it looks like.
You can download a draft concept plan which shows the route starting at Huntingdale Road overpass and running along the North Road median to Clayton Road. The route then leaves the median and runs through to the entrance to the Uni.
Train and bike commuters to the Uni will be able to leave the train at the Zone One station of Huntingdale and get themselves easily to the front gate of the Uni.
