Bike Lanes can fit!

About this page

Many existing bike lanes have been done, often in relatively easy scenarios where the space is readily available. But how can lanes be applied in the not-so-easy locations?

Union Rd Bike Lanes make the grade

Sep 07 Boroondara City Council have recently reviewed the PBN (Principle Bicycle Network) lanes which were installed in 2005/6 along Union Rd, between Belmore Rd and Surrey Hills Village. Currently they are shared parking and Bicycle lanes. The southern section however is very narrow. As the image (right) shows it does not provide a useable space for riders.

Boroondara City Council have acknowledged this and are in the process of changing these to a dedicated parking space (marginally narrower at 2m wide but still providing adequate space for parked cars), an Exclusive 1.5m Bike Lane, leaving an ample 3.2m traffic lane.

The images below show the existing lines plus the intended new lines (refer string lines).
This is a good example of new thinking being applied to deliver a positive result for all road users in a secenario which may historically been 'too hard'.
