Some simple tips on how to improve the bike parking facilities in your workplace

Do you have to park your bike in a stair well or stack it in a corner?

We have listed some points below to assist bike riders to improve the end of trip facilities in their workplace.

1. Check with fellow employees to gauge how many people currently ride and how many would like to ride if there were suitable facilities.

2. Carry out a site inspection to note where people are locking their bikes informally. For example: to signs, banisters and plumbing. Try to get some photos of these sites.

3. A good starting point for the number of bike parking spaces at your workplace is 1 for every 20 staff. Remember that good facilities attract new riders, so bear in mind you may need to expand in the future. Some workplaces have more than 1 bike parking space for every 4 staff. For more info on the requirements for new buildings see the Victorian Planning Provisions and ACT Planning Provisions (PDF 6.24 MB).

4. Other things to consider are lockers, showers and changing spaces.

5. Find out who is responsible for approving new facilities in your building.

6. The next step is to send an email to the person responsible for facilities in your building. In the email be sure to include:
